Booking a hotel online is easy, and that is also why mistakes are easy. Photos can be misleading, cancellation rules can be hidden in small print and fake listings do exist. A few careful minutes before you pay can save your whole trip.
Read the reviews the smart way
Do not stop at the star rating. Open the reviews and sort by the most recent. Look for repeated comments about cleanliness, noise, location or staff. One bad review is normal, but the same complaint ten times is a pattern. Also check the reviews from families or couples if that is who you are travelling with.
Check the exact location
Open the hotel on a map. “Close to the city centre” can mean a ten minute walk or a forty minute taxi ride. Look at how far it is from the airport, the places you want to visit and a decent restaurant. For Umrah and Hajj trips, the distance to the Haram matters a lot, so check it carefully.
Understand the cancellation policy
Many travelers only notice this after something goes wrong. Choose free cancellation when your plans are not fixed, for example while you are still waiting for a visa decision. Non-refundable rates are cheaper, but you lose the money if you cannot travel.
Look at the total price
City taxes, service charges and resort fees may be added at the end. Compare the final amount, not just the headline price. Check whether breakfast is included, and whether the room price is per room or per person.
Use trusted booking platforms
Well known booking sites keep a record of your reservation and have a support team if something goes wrong. If you book directly with a hotel through social media or a phone call, ask for written confirmation and verify it on the hotel’s official website or phone number.
Pay safely
- Pay through the booking site’s own payment page
- Avoid sending money to personal bank accounts or mobile wallets
- Keep screenshots of the booking and payment confirmation
- Use a card with an online payment limit if you can
For visa applications
Some embassies want a hotel booking for the whole stay. A refundable reservation is often a good choice here, as long as you cancel on time if the visa is refused. Do not submit fake bookings. Embassies can check them.
