Going for Umrah for the first time is a special moment, and it is natural to feel both excited and unsure. Most worries come from not knowing what to expect. If you prepare a few weeks ahead, the journey itself becomes much calmer and you can focus on worship.
1. Documents
- Passport with at least six months of validity
- Passport size photographs as requested
- CNIC copies
- Visa, hotel and flight confirmations
- Vaccination certificates if required, so check the current health rules before you go
Keep the originals in your hand baggage and a copy in your suitcase. Save a digital copy on your phone too.
2. Choose a licensed tour operator
Pakistani Umrah operators should be registered and approved by the relevant authority. Ask to see their license, read the package carefully and make sure it clearly states hotel names, distance from the Haram, transport, meals and visa. If the price is much lower than the market, be careful. Get everything in writing.
3. Understand the package
Ask these questions before you pay:
- Which hotels in Makkah and Madinah, and how far from the Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi?
- How many people share a room?
- Is airport transfer and ziyarat transport included?
- What happens if the flight is delayed or cancelled?
4. Health preparation
Walking is a big part of Umrah. Start walking a little every day a few weeks before you leave. If you have a health condition, talk to your doctor and carry your medicine in its original packaging, along with a short note or prescription. Comfortable, well-fitting footwear matters more than most people expect.
5. Packing list
- Ihram clothing for men, and modest comfortable clothing for women
- Comfortable slippers and a small bag for your shoes
- Unscented toiletries, because scented products are not allowed in the state of ihram
- Small bag or pouch for the Haram
- Prayer book or dua list, power bank and adapter
- A refillable water bottle and light snacks
6. Learn the steps beforehand
Read about the rites of Umrah, from entering ihram and making niyyah to tawaf, sa’i and the cutting or shortening of hair. Ask a knowledgeable relative or your local imam if you have questions. Knowing the order lets you worship calmly rather than following the crowd.
7. Money and phone
Carry a small amount of Saudi riyals in cash for daily needs and use a card where possible. Check roaming charges, or buy a local SIM on arrival. Share your hotel address and flight details with your family at home.
8. On arrival
Expect queues at immigration and some waiting for transport. Drink water, be patient and keep your documents handy. Be respectful of other pilgrims, and remember that the crowds are part of the experience.
