US work visas, such as the H-1B, are sponsored by the employer. Your US employer files a petition first, and you apply for the visa once it is approved.
This checklist is for Pakistani passport holders applying from Pakistan. If you live in another country, the process and documents can be different.
What the U.S. government requires
- An approved petition (Form I-129) filed by your US employer with USCIS. You cannot apply for the visa until it is approved
- The Form I-797 approval notice, whose receipt number is needed to book your interview
- For some categories, an approved labour certification from the US Department of Labor (your employer handles this)
- A valid passport, valid for at least six months beyond your stay in the US
- The DS-160 online application, with the confirmation page printed for your interview
- A photo that meets the U.S. photo requirements, uploaded with the DS-160
- The visa application fee receipt
- An interview at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate in Karachi (fingerprints are usually taken there)
Supporting documents usually needed
- Your job offer letter and employment contract
- Degrees, transcripts and experience letters that match the job
- An updated CV
