Getting a Schengen visa appointment is often the hardest part of the whole process for Pakistani applicants. Each Schengen country runs its own system in Pakistan. Some use a visa centre, some keep a waiting list, and some take applications only at the embassy in Islamabad. This guide explains how to work out which country you should apply to, and how the main embassies in Pakistan handle appointments, based on their official websites.
Step 1: Work out which country you apply to
You do not choose the embassy you like best. The EU rules decide it for you:
- If you are visiting one Schengen country, apply to that country.
- If you are visiting several, apply to the country where you will spend the most days.
- If your days are equal, apply to the country you will enter first.
- As a general rule, you apply in the country where you legally live. For most readers, that means applying in Pakistan.
Your hotel bookings and travel plan must match this choice. If you apply to one country but your bookings show most nights in another, the application can be refused.
Step 2: Check the timing
According to the European Commission, you can apply no more than 6 months before your trip and at least 15 days before it. A decision normally takes 15 days, but it can be extended up to 45 days if more checks or documents are needed. Your fingerprints are taken when you submit the application.
Appointments in Pakistan can be hard to find in busy months, so start as soon as your dates are fixed.
How the main embassies in Pakistan take appointments
Below is what the official websites say at the time of writing. Systems change, so always open the embassy’s own page before you book.
Germany
- The Embassy in Islamabad covers Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
- The Consulate General in Karachi covers Sindh and Balochistan.
- You cannot book an appointment directly. You register on a waiting list through the embassy or consulate’s online system, and appointments are given in order.
- Registration on the waiting list is free. One registration per applicant is enough; duplicates are cancelled.
- The embassy says short-stay visas usually take about 14 calendar days after you apply.
France
- All French visa applications made in Pakistan are examined by the French Embassy in Islamabad. The Consulate General in Karachi does not accept visa applications.
- France-Visas says appointment requests are made through the offices of AEG, its appointment partner in Pakistan.
- The interview and fingerprints take place at the embassy in Islamabad, so applicants from other cities need to travel there.
Italy
- Schengen applications are submitted at BLS visa application centres in Islamabad, Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad.
- Appointments are booked only through the booking website linked on the Embassy of Italy’s official page.
- The embassy warns that appointments should never be bought, and asks people to report anyone selling them.
Netherlands
- Applications are submitted at VFS Global centres in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore.
- Appointments are booked only on the VFS Global website for the Netherlands. Each person needs a separate appointment.
- You must attend in person, even if you are under 18. A VFS service charge is paid on top of the visa fee.
Other Schengen countries
Not every Schengen country has an embassy in Pakistan. Some are represented by another Schengen state, and some may ask you to apply in a neighbouring country. Before you plan anything, check the official website of the country you are applying to, or the Netherlands Worldwide and EU pages listed below, to see who handles applications from Pakistan.
What to bring to the appointment
- The completed and signed application form (for Germany, the printed Videx form with its barcode)
- Your passport and old passports
- Photos that meet the embassy’s rules
- Travel medical insurance
- Flight reservation, hotel bookings and a day-by-day plan
- Bank statements, job letter or business papers
- The visa fee and any service charge
Each embassy and visa centre publishes its own checklist. Follow that list exactly, because it can differ from country to country.
Avoid appointment scams
Several embassies warn about this directly. Germany says waiting-list registration is free and that anyone asking for money at this stage is a fraudster. The Netherlands says that if you are offered any other way to get an appointment, it is a scam. Italy says appointments should never be purchased. Book only through the official channel named on the embassy’s website.
