The first time you travel abroad, everything feels new: the airport, the forms, the currency, even the food. A bit of planning removes most of the stress. Here is a simple order of things to do, starting two to three months before you fly.
Two to three months before
- Check your passport validity and renew it if needed
- Pick your destination and read the visa rules for Pakistani passport holders
- Start collecting your documents, using our visa checklist
One month before
- Apply for your visa and keep the application receipt safe
- Book flights and hotels, preferably with flexible cancellation until the visa is approved
- Buy travel insurance
- Tell your bank you will be travelling, so your card does not get blocked
Two weeks before
- Exchange a small amount of foreign currency and keep the rest on a card
- Check baggage rules on your airline, including weight and what is not allowed
- Download offline maps, a translation app and the airline app
- Save a copy of all documents on your phone and email them to yourself
Packing smart
Check the weather for the dates you are going, and pack light layers. Put medicines, chargers, a power bank and one change of clothes in your hand baggage. Keep liquids within the airline limit. Leave space in your suitcase for shopping and avoid carrying food items that are banned at your destination.
Money tips
Carry two payment options so that you have a backup. Avoid exchanging money at the airport counters if you can, since the rates are usually poor. Keep a small amount of cash separate from the rest.
Staying connected
Check roaming packages from your Pakistani network, or buy a local SIM or eSIM at your destination. Let your family know your hotel address and flight details, and share your location with one trusted person.
At the airport
Reach three hours early for an international flight. Keep your passport, boarding pass and visa easy to reach. Be polite and patient at immigration and security. After landing, follow the signs to immigration and have your hotel address ready.
