Choosing the wrong visa type is a quiet but costly mistake. You pay the fee, wait for the result and then discover it does not allow what you planned to do. Knowing the basic categories helps you start in the right place.
Visit or tourist visa
This is for holidays, family visits, short business meetings and events. It is usually valid for a short stay, and it does not allow you to work. Many tourist visas can be applied for online as an e-visa, which makes them quick, though some countries still need an embassy appointment.
Work visa
A work visa lets you take up a job in another country. It usually needs a job offer from an employer, and often the employer starts part of the process. The paperwork is longer, the rules are stricter and the time is longer. Do not try to work on a visit visa, as it can lead to deportation and future bans.
Study visa
For students enrolled at a school, college or university abroad. You normally need an acceptance letter, proof of funds for tuition and living costs and sometimes an English language test. Some study visas allow limited part-time work, but the rules differ for each country.
Transit visa
If you only change planes in another country, you may or may not need a transit visa. This depends on the airport, the airline and your nationality. Check before you buy a ticket with a long layover, especially if you will leave the airport.
Business visa
Business visas cover meetings, conferences and trade visits. They are different from work visas, because you do not take employment in the country. You usually need an invitation letter from the company you are visiting.
How to decide
- Write down exactly what you will do in the country.
- Check the official immigration website for the category that matches.
- Read the requirements and processing time.
- If your case sits between two categories, ask the embassy or a trusted consultant.
